Play and improvisation are at the heart of who I am and how I engage and uplift myself. It’s also at the heart of my work with clients. We heal through reconnecting with our playful spirit!
The truth is, I became overly serious as a child. The need to get things right and to excel became the most important thing. Somewhere along the way, my creativity and aliveness got hijacked by the need to GET BETTER. To be better. Sound familiar? And getting better became the thing that I valued most. It is clear, from here, that this is definitely not the path to peace and happiness!
Somewhere along the way, amidst all the good intentions and ways of preparing me for life ahead, I got the message that my pure playful expression simply wasn’t enough. The need to get better at everything, devoured the joy in being spontaneous and playful. A critical inner voice took its place, telling me that I was silly, stupid, and wasting my time. I grew into an adult, still feeling like a child who wanted to play but needed to get down to the business of life. And I felt like a failure.
Now I know that my playful spirit is the most important thing. When it shows up, I listen! Because our playfulness is at the heart of our aliveness, our joy and our creativity. And the big secret is that we can actually get better at whatever we set our sights on, by letting our playful spirit run free. This precious life energy is just aching to be expressed! And we’re the only ones who can step into it and say YES, like that! JUST LIKE THAT!
Can you create a safe space for your playful spirit to come out into the world? Your spirit needs you to cultivate these places, where you shrug off that heavy mantle of needing to be better than you are right now, and of pushing yourself to live up to some expectation.
Together, let’s invite our creative spirits to celebrate life, and to celebrate US, just as we are, right now, with all our imperfections.
